September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur Shot - Today in Crime History

On this day, September 7,  in 1996, rap star Tupac Shakur was shot several times in his BMW after attending a boxing match in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He died in the hospital several days later while being treated for his injuries.

At the time of the shooting, Shakur was riding with Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight, who was grazed by bullets in the attack.  Shakur's killer, who fired the shots from a white Cadillac, was never identified.  Some believe Orlando Anderson, a member of the Los Angeles-based Crips street gang, was to blame because Knight and a group of individuals associated with Death Row Records had attacked Anderson in the lobby of the MGM Grand Hotel earlier in the evening.   Shakur's mother suspected a revenge attack and filed a law suit against Anderson, but the civil case was closed after Anderson was killed in a shoot-out outside a Los Angeles car wash in May, 1998.  To this date no one has ever been prosecuted for this crime committed on September 7, 1996.
